Name: Kids Count Vigil (guest speaker John Turnipseed)
    Date: March 17, 2016 - April 27, 2016
    Event Description:
Former gang leader, pimp, drug dealer to speak at Vigil John Turnipseed is a former gang leader, pimp and drug dealer, who spent his childhood battling demons brought on by a volatile, abusive father. In a 20-year journey, Turnipseed has transformed into a community leader, pastor, and inspiring speaker. He serves as the Director of The Center for Fathering and Vice President of Urban Ventures, a Minneapolis non-profit set in the heart of the same gang territory that John and his family terrorized. HOPE Coalition is proud to announce John Turnipseed as the guest speaker at its annual Kids Count Vigil on Wednesday April 27, 6pm, at Twin Bluff Middle School, Red Wing, during National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Kids Count is HOPE Coalition?s program for children 0-18 who have experienced or witnessed abuse, violence or neglect. Turnipseed?s book ?Bloodline? vividly recounts his early life of violence, drug use and pimping, before his dramatic turnaround. It?s a powerful story of how faith, hope, and forgiveness, along with determined and persevering mentors and role models transformed a deeply troubled life. Twin City Television selected Turnipseed?s story as the first of its ?Everyday Hero? segments. His life is highlighted in the film Turnipseed (www.turnipseedfilm.com), and he was recently featured in a Star Tribune article on a "search for those doing work that counts".
