Seven print suites from the 1990s to the 2020s fill M.E.T. Projects’ second-floor gallery Nov. 8 – Dec. 20 RED WING, Minn. — M.E.T. Projects, a contemporary art gallery, will present Steven Sorman: Suites, a solo exhibition of seven print suites made over three decades by a master printmaker and painter whose work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Tate. Opening Sunday, Nov. 8, in downtown Red Wing, the exhibition spans work from the 1990s through the 2020s. The exhibition, M.E.T. Projects’ second solo show, runs through Dec. 20. A public opening and opportunity to meet the artist will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 8. Admission is free. Sorman was born in Minneapolis in 1948 and earned his BFA from the University of Minnesota in 1971. He lives and works in Red Wing. His prints are known for layered handmade papers and for combining several processes on a single sheet, with printing joined to collage, drawing and hand painting. The seven suites on view are “usual sense,” “breathing,” “in silence,” “the familiar planets,” “blind compass,” “our skin this paper” and “t(here).” Like nearly all of Sorman’s titles, they are lowercase and rarely simple nouns. They tell a viewer where to stand more than what to look at. In “t(here),” the word “here” sits inside “there.” In 1984 Sorman began working with Kenneth Tyler, the master printer whose workshop changed what an American print could be. Their collaboration continued for two decades and produced series including Rumors of Virtue, 73 monotype collages on layered handmade Japanese papers. When Tyler’s half century of collaboration was surveyed in The Art of Collaboration, Sorman was one of 11 artists chosen to represent it, alongside Josef Albers, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell and Frank Stella. Sorman’s work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Tate in London, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Walker Art Center, which holds some 80 of his works. He has received a Bush Foundation Fellowship and a Rockefeller Foundation residency in Paris. Suites follows Tom Lane: On Relationship: What Connects, What Divides (Oct. 4 – Nov. 1), M.E.T. Projects’ first solo exhibition, and Impermanence (Aug. 16 – Sept. 20), the gallery’s inaugural international group exhibition, which included four recent works on paper by Sorman.
