In 1890, Red Wing suffered one of the worst maritime disasters in Mississippi River history: a storm struck the Sea Wing steamboat as it traveled from Lake City to Red Wing, and caused the boat to sink. 98 people, mostly Red Wing citizens, tragically lost their lives in the catastrophe. Local historian and author Frederick Johnson explains the events leading up to the disaster, what went wrong, and the aftermath of what has been called the ‘Mississippi’s Titanic.’
